Local Calgary DJ
the story of Chris Chong
Tue, 04/24/2012
Whenever we find ourselves looking to get away from our dreary daytime deeds, it can sometimes lead us to our favorite night-time destination. Some of us love the music, others the atmosphere, others the dancing and the energy. However, for Chris Chong, it was the love of the music. He spent his summer afternoons daydreaming about the rhythm of the beats while he sat in class, waiting for the bell to ring. It merely started as an idea in the minds of a couple of high school friends, and has finally become more of a reality than ever.

The winner of the 2012 Dirty Tones DJ Competition at Habitat Living Sound, Chris Chong, began his venture into the DJing career alongside his friend who is also a predominant figure in the DJ industry in Calgary: Jeff Whitmore (Amdiem). Together the pair invested in some DJ equipment, and they never looked back. Chris Chong was also lucky enough to have his brother introduce him to Chris Hastings (Gemini), another popular local DJ. With the backing and support of these two local figures, Chong ended up bringing his own interests to the table, to create himself as another great local artist.
Always moving, always skipping to the beat. Chris Chong never misses a drop in his set, because he's always moving with it so fluidly. Anyone who has seen him perform can attest to it, and he stands behind his word when he says "If you don't dance to your own music, why should anyone else?". Bringing his own philosophies to the DJ table, his energy feeds the crowds he's perfoming for in nothing but a positive manner.
"I really just start having fun and enjoying myself. I try to play like I'm playing at home behind my own tables. Thats where I feel most comfortable"
From here, the sky is the limit for Chris Chong. The Dirty Tones DJ Competition has opened up alot of opportunities that he had never even anticipated prior. He will be attending an Ableton course at Beatdrop, and performing at upcoming events such as CEMF (Calgary Electronic Music Festival) and Fozzy Fest. While his popularity grows however, he's decided not to let things go to his head. He'll always be there to play for his local fans. As most of you know, alot of the time the DJ will get the girl at the end of the night. As for Chris Chong, he mentioned he does get the girl; However, it is always the same one: his girlfriend Mel of 6 years.
"My biggest fan! Behind all good DJs is a girlfriend waiting to leave the club and head to a fast food place before bed"
So keep an eye out locally, even if you're not from Calgary, for Chris Chong. He may be rockin' whatever outfit he feels like wearing that night, and placing his natural comfort behind the decks at a local nightclub! Congratulations to Chris Chong, the 2012 Dirty Tones DJ Competition Winner, and a very talented DJ.
